Sherlock Holmes: But which adaptation?
My Pantone colour 5473 for my container, a dark teal, a mix of green and blue

I made an immediate connection to one of my favourite fictional characters, Sherlock Holmes but was unsure why however after some researching into the various different adaptations of the original Arthur Conan Doyle detective I found a movie poster and a scene from BBC's Sherlock which both make use of the colour to convey strong emotion.
This Poster advertising one of the more recent screen appearances of Sherlock Holmes, uses the colour pantone 5473 in varying degrees of saturation in the poster with the only stand out different colour being that of the Holmes and Watsons' complexions and the suite which Holmes is wearing. This led my subconscious to automatically link this colour with Sherlock Holmes and this is the ploy that marketers for the film use to encourage audiences to watch.
This gif is taken from what is arguably one of the most nerve wracking end of series cliff hangers, the final showdown of BBC's Sherlock Series 1. The cinematography in this scene uses the predominant colour of the swimming pool as the main hue, the entire scene bathed in the eerie coloured glow intended to make the audience feel uneasy and on edge. This is the scene from the series that sticks in my mind most and as with the movie poster above led my subconscious to relate my colour to Sherlock Holmes.

"Anderson: According to someone, the murderer has the case and we found it in the hands of our favorite psychopath.
Sherlock: I'm not a psychopath, Anderson. I'm a high-functioning sociopath. Do your research." - A Study in Pink Sherlock July 2010
In spite of his claims and obvious hatred for the company of other humans whose stupidity annoys him he enjoys the companionship of John Watson, considered to be his only friend and although having his moments of anger at Mrs Hudson his current landlady, is inclined to show her affection too, however the rest of the human race are not spared his contempt.

If Sherlock were to occupy a densely populated place such as the proposed Curzon Street building with several shipping containers on top of each other then he would need to have respect for those around him or maintain some distance. Sherlock does interact with other humans but only when it is absolutely necessary for his work and even when this occurs he insults them. Therefore the placing of the container will need to take this into account.
Vocation
'JOHN: Who are you? What do you do?
SHERLOCK: What do you think?
JOHN (slowly, hesitantly): I’d say private detective ...
SHERLOCK: But?
JOHN: ... but the police don’t go to private detectives.
SHERLOCK: I’m a consulting detective. Only one in the world. I invented the job.
JOHN: What does that mean?
SHERLOCK: It means when the police are out of their depth, which is always, they consult me.'- A Study in Pink Sherlock
Sherlock's job is unique, he is a consulting detective the only one in the world and he is 'married to his work'-A Study in Pink Sherlock, designing a home for him has to take this in to account. His job means that he needs a lab to use for forensic analysis, adequate freezer storage (see below), space for reference books and other work equipment, and of course a place to take out his frustrations when there are no cases to solve.
A favourite Piece of Creative Work
BBC's Sherlock is lacking in this respect, Sherlock seems so invested in his work that all books belonging to him in his London flat relate to it 'An illustrated guide to Human Decomposition' by Warren Court, 'How to kill a Man with Cutlery' by Shelley Von Trampp , the "art work" on the walls 'Amunition through the Ages'. And Sherlock is said to, according to John read My Weekly, in order to observe the way in which human life works of course. (reference Guy Adams 2012 Sherlock The Casebook BBC Books)
However Arthur Conan Doyle provides us an insight in the original books which considering the BBC Sherlock's love of violin playing is probably seen to follow through in characterisation.
Sherlock is seen to enjoy violin-filled classical music
"German [music] . . . is rather more to my taste than Italian or French." -- Sherlock Holmes, 'The Red-Headed League'
[Sherlock Holmes was] patiently occupied upon a subject which he had recently made his hobby - the music of the Middle Ages. -- John Watson, 'The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans'

Habits and Hobbies
By far some of the more annoying aspects of Sherlock are his habits and hobbies as he warns John upon their first meeting
SHERLOCK: How do you feel about the violin?
(John looks round at Molly but she’s on her way out the door. He glances at Mike who is still smiling smugly, and finally realises that Sherlock is talking to him.)
JOHN: I’m sorry, what?
SHERLOCK (typing on a laptop keyboard as he talks): I play the violin when I’m thinking. Sometimes I don’t talk for days on end. (He looks round at John.)Would that bother you? Potential flatmates should know the worst about each other.
(He throws a hideously false smile at John, who looks at him blankly for a moment then looks across to Mike.)- A Study in Pink
Sherlocks main hobby is playing the Violin, any space designed for him must include space for him to practice this, as stated above he plays it when he thinks, which in his line of work is nearly all the time.
It is also stated in Conan Doyles books that on retirement Holmes moved to Sussex and took up beekeeping as his main hobby, this therefore could be something to take into account. |
A list of Sherlocks Habits:
